Flying Free: Parasailing at Marina del Rey
Liftoff for Fairmont Miramar concierge Rick Graham and his nephews.

There are so many water sports that take at least a little bit of skill. But there's one that you can do without any effort at all: parasailing!

My colleague at the concierge desk, Rick Graham, recently tried it out with his nephews, and they had such a blast (can you tell by the photo?). They used Marina del Rey Parasailing, which is super local — just 15 minutes from the hotel.

Part of the fun is a 90-minute boat excursion that takes you out into the Pacific. From the deck of the boat you slip into the harness seat and are launched into the air on either a 500-foot or 800-foot tether (Rick and his kids were brave: they went for 800!). The sail takes you flying, giving you panoramic views of the coast, including the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach Boardwalk.

Because you launch and land right from the deck of the boat, you never have to get wet. I've heard of people going parasailing in tuxedoes and cocktail dresses! But if you're up for some extra fun, you can agree to a "touch and go" where you're lowered to dip your toes in the ocean!

After parasailing, I recommend a stroll through Fisherman's Village right there in Marina del Rey. It's a cute little group of shops and restaurants overlooking the harbor. You can get an ice cream, and take in the sunset.

Or, you can look out over the water and marvel at how you were just sailing hundreds of feet above it!
