The hottest club to open in Santa Monica is The Bungalow, and I'm not just saying that because it's a stone's throw from my concierge desk!
The Bungalow is a 1947 former hotel bungalow that's been converted into a fabulous cocktail lounge — but it's not owned or managed by the hotel. It's a club by Brent Bolthouse, one of the most recognized party promotors in the city. He's definitely lent his midas touch to The Bungalow, which opened just last month and already has lines forming as early as 7:30 pm.
It may have something to do with the fact that it's the only dedicated cocktail lounge in Santa Monica with a full ocean view, and with both indoor and outdoor spaces. The vibe is rustic and beachy, retro and chic. It feels like you're at a party at your coolest friend's even-cooler friend's beachside bungalow — think pool table, fireplaces and leather couches inside, and Adirondack chairs, hanging lanterns and ping-pong outside.
The first half of the evening is very chill; the music levels are nowhere near Hollywood club levels. The beautiful — make that very beautiful — crowd is hanging out, noshing on guacamole, and drinking sangria (made with local farmer's market fruit) or Xingu (one of several rare beers on the menu).
Don't be surprised if you find that the person kicking it next to you is none other than David Beckham himself. It's that kind of place.
