In a beach town like Santa Monica, there’s one food that’s often on my guests’ minds: seafood. As you would expect, there are plenty of restaurants putting their own spin on the catch of the day, but I’ve got the inside track on three of the best:
This is a local favorite for its classic American seafood menu, including fresh shellfish and live lobsters. Breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean also make the Lobster a date-night destination. Dining on the terrace, you can take in the salty coastal air and, if you’re lucky, a view of the “green flash phenomenon,” where the sea and sky turn emerald green.
Everything about Vito rings of old-world Italian, from waiters dressed in tuxedos to its elegant table settings and soft lighting. But a look at the menu makes it clear that the seafood pastas are the showstoppers. Many dishes, such as the linguine with clams, shrimp, calamari and mussels in a marinara sauce, are as authentic as you’ll find outside of Italy.
La Serenata de Garibaldi
Though the setting is casual at La Serenata de Garibaldi, the fresh seafood menu sizzles. Innovative appetizers such as fish empanadas filled with Monterrey Jack cheese and herbs, and shrimp enchilada entrées in green tomatillo sauce will serenade you. Ask about their salsa of the day, like their slightly sweet mole or the garlic-rich mojo de ajo, to make your dish really sing!
